Say So Long To Plastic Ware, Throw Away Meal Containers
Will take-out dinner turn into a thing of the past in San Jose? Might your beloved Chinese, Thai, udon, sushi, salad, or pizza to-go spot go the way of the Dodo?
The good people at San Jose City Hall have recently been very privately talking over methods for getting free of the waste materials problem that comes with food to go over the last several months, and open public meetings on the subject will continue into early spring 2012.
Their argument for the desire to modify the way meals to go gets taken out is that lots of this waste eventually ends up not inside the trash can or landfill, but in creeks all around San Jose. Which we all agree is an extremely very bad thing. Why people can’t get their plastic-type forks and containers into a suitable recycling container is beyond us.
But before you panic too much about losing the opportunity to eat noodles at lunch from a to-go box, let’s just slow down and consider this. There’s no reason to panic.
Nor must we presume that individuals can fix this problem by carrying around glassware for lunch and snacks within our handbags or back packs the entire day. Not only would that be incredibly inconvenient, it would be completely in opposition to local and state health codes dealing with food handling and sanitation.
This isn't a recyclable food market bag scale of a problem. And if you look at just how much people flipped out about needing to move away from using plastic and paper bags for their groceries, you can visualize the magnitude of anxiety that’s going to come with this problem.
But isn’t there a very simple answer here? Why not consider reprocessed cardboard containers and personal utensils together with self-enclosed containers (just like a travel tooth brush). Let’s hope city leaders find some good support for these sorts of straightforward, effective alternatives from their questionnaire and myriad community meetings.
